Isabel Reforestation and Water Shed Development
Friday, September 19, 2008
I was invited to a conference by the LGU of Isabel last September 18. In attendance were local government and barangay officials, and representatives of private companies, schools, cooperatives, professional/civic/religious organizations and NGO's.

This is another project of the Local Government Unit of Isabel, headed by Gen. Saturnino M. Medina, Jr. (Ret.) - the honorable town mayor, ably assisted by the municipal administrator, Engr. Saylito Purisima.

The target is to be able to plant a total of 500,000 mahogany and other trees in a period of 5 years. Initially, this year, about 40,000 tree seedlings have been planted already. On September 26, the remaining 60,000 trees (for year one) will be planted by some 1800 volunteers in the mountains of Potingbato. The LIDE LADIES CLUB, to which I belong, fully support this undertaking, so we will be going up the mountains to plant as many tree seedlings as we can, on that day.

The whole municipality of Isabel was declared a BIRD SANCTUARY, by virtue of Resolution No. 0708 - 116. Furthermore, there is a ban on indiscriminate cutting of trees for the next 25 years - Ordinance No. 2008 - 11.

I'm so happy to be a part of these laudable projects, which will benefit the present and future generations of Isabelanons.

Kudos to the LGU of Isabel, Leyte and the other sectors that have pledged their support for the undertaking.

MABUHAY!!!
